The Supreme Court has allowed medical colleges, which were not granted recognition by the Medical Council of India (MCI) due to certain deficiencies, to admit students on the condition that their management would remove the shortcomings as soon as possible.

Keeping in view the fact that around 3,000 medical seats would go waste if no interim direction was issued, a bench led by Justice Anil R Dave allowed the colleges to run and directed the heads of the colleges to give an undertaking within 10 days that there was no defect in the colleges run by them.

“They would also state that their deposit with the Medical Council of India, which is around Rs 10 crore, be forfeited by way of penalty if the statement made in the undertaking is found to be incorrect at the time of the next inspection,” the bench said.
